US Congressman. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1891, taught school while studying law, and became an attorney in Deming, New Mexico in 1893. In 1894 he relocated to McGregor, Texas, where he served as City Attorney until resigning to moved to Waco in 1896. He was McLennan County's Assistant County Attorney from 1898 to 1902, a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1899 to 1901, and District Attorney from 1902 to 1906. Cross gave up practicing law in 1917, becoming active in farming, real estate and other business ventures. In 1928 he was the successful Democratic candidate for a seat in the US House of Representatives, serving four terms, 1929 to 1937. He did not run for reelection in 1936, returned to his farming and business activities, authored 1937's "Congressional, After Dinner and Other Speeches", and was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for Congress in 1940.
