JOHN NELSON BISHOP, the fourth son of Charles Albert Bishop and Margaret (Watt) Bishop was born on 15 Jan 1885 in Crystal Twp, Tama, Iowa. On January 31, 1906 in Marshalltown Iowa he married Miss Annabelle Bartley, daughter of John Salmon Bartley and Isabelle A. (Shettel) Bartley.

On November 15, 1907, John filed a cash land patent (Document No. 18583) for a total of 160 acres of land located at meridan 05, Township 096 N, Range 067 W, Section 035 in Gregory County, South Dakota. On June 30, 1906 his brother Joseph had filed a similar patent and convinced John to try homesteading in South Dakota. For several years John and Annabelle lived in a sod house.

In 1932 John and Annabelle moved to a farm located 1 mile West and 2 miles South of Rowley, Buchanan County, Iowa. Although John completed only up to the fifth grade, he recognized the importance of education. He served on the Rowley School Board from 1933 to 1948 and encouraged Helen, Dorothy, Marian and Maxine to become school teachers. He was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church located at 212 Park Avenue, Rowley, Iowa 52329.

Grandpa Bishop's Table Grace:

We are again thankful, Kind Father, for this another manifestation of Thy Goodness towards Us. We ask You to bless this food for its intended use and Us to Thy Service. These favors We ask through Christ's Name,

Amen.
