Leola was my grandmother and was a very outgoing person. No one can say they didn't know exactly where they stood with grandma. She had a sense of humor and ability to make comments that would have you rolling in the floor. Her quick wit also included the ability to cut you to the bone when she disagreed with you and you wouldn't even realize it until later. Leola suffered from dementia in her later years and this caused much stress between her and the rest of the family but the one thing I remember most was how much love she had in her heart. I lived with her for almost four years and she always had a great interest in what I was doing and making sure everything was going just so. She was a consummate cook and loved her irises. She had almost every breed of iris known to man planted in her yard. Her green thumb was known throughout Dalhart and if anyone who knew her had a plant that wasn't doing well you can bet they would bring it to her and in a matter of days she would have it growing and glowing again. She was a nurse at the nursing home in Dalhart and the people she cared for were as much her family as anyone who was blood kin. I think she probably had the greatest impact on my wanting to know more about my family history and was the one who started me in working on genealogy.
