PC#37 William 'Charles' Alger of the Great Yarmouth Constabulary. The only Norfolk Constable ever murdered in the line of duty. Killed on 18 Aug 1909 by petty thief & rat catcher Thomas Allen. Died of a shotgun wound to the upper face & neck severing his curroted artery. He left a wife Rosa & 4 children under the age of 10 years. His descendants have not forgotten his sacrifice & devotion to his family, neighbours & the citizens of Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

The headstone today is completely devoid of it's original white coating but still legible. You can see the carving quite clearly on the top of the headstone. Photo was taken Aug. 13th 2009.

PC #37 Charles William Alger. The only Norfolk Police Officer ever murdered in the line of duty. He died of a gunshot wound to the face & neck on 18 Aug. 1909 in Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. Thomas Allen (a petty thief & rat catcher)was tried & convicted of his murder & sentenced to death. His conviction was reprieved & he spent the rest of his life in Broadmoore Physciatric Hosp. for the Criminally Insane located in Berkshire, England. Charlie was my Grandad George Alger's eldest brother.
