Warrant Officer, 2nd Battalion, The Irish Regiment of Canada based in Sudbury, Ontario (seconded from the Royal 22e Regiment based in Valcartier, Quebec). Aged 45, he was born in Hull, QC and raised in Hanmer, ON. He was deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan as a member of the Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team.
He and Sgt Gregory Kruse were killed along with an Afghan National Police officer and an Afghan interpreter after a bomb detonated while they were conducting security operations. Four other Canadian soldiers and another local interpreter were injured in the incident, which occurred in the Panjwaii district, approximately 25 kilometres west of Kandahar City.
WO Roberge joined the military at age 18 and previously served overseas in Bosnia. His awards include the Canadian Forces Decoration with clasp. "Gates" was described as a very professional, experienced and dedicated soldier with a nice personality beneath a gruff exterior. He is survived by his wife Joanne, two children and two step-children, his parents Guy and Claudette, sister Chantal and other family and friends.
Funeral Mass held Monday, January 5, 2009 at St. Jean de Brébeuf Church, Sudbury.
A total of 106 soldiers and one diplomat have died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
