Johann Heinrich Ladewig, called Henry in English, was born in Birnbaum, Posen, Prussia on 19 Feb. 1839 to Friedrich Christian and Dorathea (Janetzki) Ladewig. The Ladewig family were Lutherans. Henry emigrated on the bark "Fortuna" from the port of Bremen on 10 Aug. 1867, arriving in Galveston Texas on 4 Nov. 1867. Traveling with him were his brother Julius Ladewig, and sister Henriette Ladewig.

Henry's occupation was given as blacksmith on his immigration records. He married Anna Wilhelmine Caroline Wehrbach on 22 Jan. 1869 in Fayette Co., TX. The couple separated almost immediately, with Caroline filing suit against Henry on 27 Aug. 1869 in the District Court of Fayette Co. On 2 Dec. 1869, the couple's son Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Ladewig was born. After a protracted and nasty court case, a divorce decree was finally granted to the Ladewigs on 6 Dec. 1872.

Henry Ladewig is enumerated in the 1870 Census in Lavaca County living with his sister Amalie Ladewig. His occupation was blacksmith. Henry wasted little time before marrying again, this time to Auguste Kettner, daughter of August and Johanne Kettner. They were married 1 Jan 1874 in Fayette Co. TX.

Henry and Auguste had 6 children before they too divorced. Their children were Rosa Ladewig, who married Herman Persky; Henry Charles; Augusta Louise who married Frank Schmidt; Olga who married Paul Kuemmel; Richard who married Olga Hereck; and Walter who married Ella Maeker. Johann Heinrich Ladewig died on his birthday, 19 Feb. 1906, in Bexar Co., TX, and is buried in Breslau Cemetery, Breslau, Lavaca Co., TX.
