Kennington, George (1) (20 Jul 1939)
Bishop Kennington Laid to Rest Sunday
Seldom in the history of Star Valley have its citizens been called upon to mourn the loss of a man more universally beloved and respected than George s. Kennington who departed this life in Afton at his family residence, following a long and trying illness, July 21, 1939.
Mr Kennington was born in Ovid, Idaho, September 28, 1879, the son of Wm. H. and Annie R. Seward Kennington. He came to Star Valley with his parents in 1886. His first home was in Afton, where he resided until he was called on a long term L.D.S. Mission to the Southern States in 1905. Following his return to Star Valley he made his home in Freedom where he resided until 1913, when he returned to Afton to live.
While in Freedom he was manager of the original Freedom branch of the Burton Mercantile Co. It was while in this position that he contacted and endeared himself to practically all of the citizens of lower Star Valley.
During this period he married Ada C. Kimball, in the Logan temple, June 24, 1908. To this union three children were born one son died in infancy. Mrs Kennington died following the birth of twin daughters in Thatcher, Arizona.
Mr Kennington was transferred from Freedom to Afton in 1913, where he spent the remainder of his life.
He married Martha Weber, Oct. 23, 1913, also in the Logan Temple and to this marriage 10 children were born, nine of whom survive their father.
While in Afton, Mr Kennington was ever an active consistent and devout Latter-day Saint, as he had been in Freedom, and throughout his entire life. Among the positions of honor which he held were superintendent of the freedom and Afton Y.M.M.I.A. Member of the Sunday School Superintendency of Freedom a class leader, and teacher in Afton and member of the Sunday School stake Board. He was counselor to Bishop Gilbert Taysom and Bishop C.J. Call for seven years. He then presided as Bishop of the Afton South ward for five years.
Mr Kennington was also Mayor of Afton for two terms and councilman for three terms, and held an important position on Agricultural committee when he became ill.
He was a man of honor, dignity, and excellent judgment. His wise counsel and fine congenial spirit were a strength to everyone he contacted. It is indeed difficult to express in works, adequately the glories of such a splendid life, so nobly lived. We deeply mourn his loss.
Beneath a flawless summer sky and on the scene of his greatest activity, in the beautiful and impressive services a last tribute was paid him in the South Ward chapel Sunday July 23 under the direction of the North Bishopric with Royle S. Papworth in charge.
A profusion of floral offering banked the rostrum.
The Processional was played by Margaret B. Winters.
