Birth: Feb. 7, 1844
Gevenich
Cochem-Zeller Landkreis
Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
Death: Jun. 6, 1865
New Orleans
Orleans Parish
Louisiana, USA

Son of Nicholas and Barbara Shoup who immigrated to Johnstown, NY in 1852 from the Mosel River Valley in Germany. He enlisted in the army on 8/22/1862 and mustered in 10/17/1862 as a private Company D 153rd Infantry. He died on June 6, 1865 at the Marine Hospital, New Orleans after being wounded at the Battle of Pleasant Ridge Hill on 4/9/1864 and taken prisoner. He apparently fought in several conflicts. He had blue eyes, black hair and stood 5'7". He had at least one younger brother, Martin and two younger sisters; Catherine and Margaret both born in America. He and his parents must have immigrated in June of 1852 from Germany to America because his father put that down on his naturalization papers. He and his parents emigrated on June 1st 1852 from Gevenich, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany to America via Liverpool, England on the ship named Meridian. He was listed as Nicol - age 8. He likely did not just die from his wounds as most soldiers died from severe diarrhea in the Civil War.
