RUFFIN - Mr. Glen Vance Smyly, 66, of 1527 Smyly Road, Ruffin, died Wednesday evening, December 10, 2008, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. Funeral services will be conducted 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, December 13, 2008, from Zion Baptist Church, 152 Ruffin Road, Walterboro, with The Reverend Tom McJunkin and The Reverend Andy Garrett officiating.

Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro. Mr. Smyly was born January 28, 1942, in Colleton County and was a son of the late Lee W. Smyly and the late Lula Carroll Smyly. Known as a hard working man, he was retired from both Westinghouse in Hampton and International Paper, as well as a longtime Colleton County farmer.

He was an active member of Zion Baptist Church where he was a member of the church's Brotherhood group. Everyone knew Vance as a loving and devoted friend, but he will be especially remembered for the love he possessed for his family making him a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He will also be remembered for his love of fishing and farming. Surviving are: his wife of forty-five years, Mrs. Diane Grayson Smyly; two children, Lisa Smyly Breland and her husband Richard W. Breland of Ruffin and Grayson Vance Smyly and his wife Julie J. Smyly of Round O; a sister, Carroll B. Godwin and her husband Thomas of Walterboro; a brother, Mongin Smyly; and a sister-in-law, Jackie Saunders Bennett of Walterboro. There are four grandchildren, who were the love of his life, Lauren McKenzie Breland, Jordan Lee Breland, Jacob Richard Breland, and Grayson Lee Smyly that also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Winston G. Bennett. Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to: The Gideon's International, Camp of Walterboro No. 3915, Post Office Box 84, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
