Gerhard Schwieters was born in Haren, Hanover Germany May 17 , 1847. In his boyhood he was a sailor in the English Merchant Marine and helped load the ship that laid the first Trans-Atlantic cable from Ireland to Newfoundland in 1865. He came to America at 23 years of age and settled in Lafayette, Indiana in Oct 1877.He was employed by the Lake Erie and Western Railroad retiring around 1915.
