CANTON -- Vernon C. "Red" Thomas, 81, of 835 S. Fifth Ave. died at 12:24 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1993, at Graham Hospital in Canton.
Born May 9, 1912, in Yates City to Frank and Myrtle Dalton Thomas, he married Wilma May Jackway on May 15, 1945, in Palmyra, Mo. She died Aug. 22, 1966, in Canton. He married Wilma Jean Baxter on Dec. 29, 1969, in Lewistown. She died Feb. 12, 1981, in Canton. He also was preceded in death by one great-grandchild and one sister.
Surviving are five sons,13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He worked for Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg for 25 years, retiring in 1977. He was a former coal miner. A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Post and Moose Lodge 1571, both of Farmington, and Elks Lodge 626. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton. The Rev. Norman Waligora will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home.
