Marvin Smotherman, 86, of the Cedar Grove Community of Bedford County, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008.

Mr. Smotherman was a native of Bedford County. He served in the Navy during World War II and was retired from the City of Detroit's Department of Parks and Recreation. He was a member of the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, the Unionville Lions Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Walter and Ora Blanche Beasley Smotherman; sisters, Irene Marlin, Katherine Newman, Frances Hall, and Annie Smotherman; and brothers, Clayton and Cornell Smotherman.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Smotherman of Cedar Grove; daughters, Sharon Smotherman of Cedar Grove and Kendra Smotherman of Townsend; son, William Smotherman of Cedar Grove; and brother, Ernest Herman Smotherman of Huntsville, Ala.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Lawrence Funeral Home, and continue at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, until service time.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry Harris officiating, followed by burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
