Private First Class Charles Eades Bancroft, Service Number: 6292375, 28th Bomb Squadron, 19th Bomb Group (Heavy), 5th Bomber Command, United States Army Air Forces. He was taken Prisoner by the Imperial Japanese Army around 9 April 1942, but not reported by them until 7 May 1942 on the Bataan Peninsula, Luzon Island, Philippine Islands (Battle of Bataan) during the Philippine Island Unit Campaign.

Charles survived the Bataan Death March and was held at Camp O'Donnell until transferred over to the Shinyo Maru. The Shinyo Maru was a Japanese Freighter utilized by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. She was one of the so called Hell Ships, used to transport prisoners of war to be used as slave labor. These ships never posted they were carrying allied prisoners of war nor marked with a Red Cross. The Shinyo Maru was sunk 7 September 1944 near Liloy, Sindangan Point, Zambonga Province, Mindanao Island, Philippines by the US Navy submarine USS Paddle (SS-263). There were approximately 750 American prisoners of war aboard. Some Japanese guards shot prisoners as they struggled from the holds or were in the water; 688 died when the ship sank, leaving only 82 survivors.

Charles is listed on the Tablets of the Missng Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Luzon, Philippines. He also has a memorial at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Washington County, Tennessee.

Charles' the son of George Eastland Bancroft and Lennie Katherine Davis.
