In Memory of
W.E. "Pete" ARTHUR, JR.
May 22, 1923 ~ Nov. 25, 2008
He was a great dancer and charmed all the ladies at Camp Pendleton, especially Mom - who snagged him before anyone else could. He married Ann Marie Wilson on May 31, 1948 in Brawley, California. Husband, Father, Brother, Patriot & Friend. From his birthplace in Antonito, Colorado to his resting place in Lancaster, California, he touched many lives. He was the eldest of six childfen born to Walter Edward Arthur and Thelma Minerva Huffaker; brothers William "Bud" and James "Peewee" and sisters Constance "Corn", Thelma Laverne "Term" and Mary Lee "Merk". His early years were spent in and around Durango and Hesperus working with his brothers in their dad's mine. He also worked in the local stock yards, movie theater and was a tow truck driver. He entered the U.S. Marines on January 6, 1942 and served his country until January 8, 1946. He was a machine gun crewman and was decorated with the Good Conduct and Marksman Medal during his enlistment. He saw action at Bougainville, B.S.I., the Northern Solomon Islands, Guam and the Marianas Islands. He said of himself "I island-hopped for three years from New Zealand to Guam".
Their sixty years together produced one daughter, Debbie, and two sons, Don and Ken. From there the family expanded to five grandchildren: Jeffrey, Leeann, Don, Adrian and Rachel; and nine great grandchildren: Amber, Koby, Amanda, Taylor, Josh, Daniel, Gavin, Talan and Shannon. The family moved from California to Colorado and back over the years. During the years 1948 - 1951, Debbie and Don were born in Durango. Ken was born in Lancaster in 1953, where they stayed until 1986. Pete and Ann wanted to return to Durango, and so they did for 4 years, until they just needed to be closer to those grand kids - so back to Lancaster they came. Starting in Colorado after his discharge from the Marines, Pete learned his lifelong vocation of auto body repair through the Veterans apprentice program. When the family first moved to California, Pete continued his work at H.W. Hunter, Bud Willer Oldsmobile, Lancaster Ford, Starksen/Rally Chevrolet and Desert Body Works. He finally opened his own shop, "Arthur's Body Shop" in 1973. During this time, he helped to establish the auto body repair class at Antelope Valley College and instructed there for two years. He semi-retired in 1978 while he re-modeled their home on Avenue N in Lancaster. Ever energetic, he went to work for E.G. & G.Lockheed Air Service as a maintenance man and flight attendant for crews traveling to Area 51. While he never disclosed what he saw, we know he had a great time working there. He was a lifelong member of the Elks. Being involved with the Elks led to his involvement in the Sherri Chefs - one of his great loves. He enjoyed cooking for people and served as the chairperson of the Sherri Chefs for seven years. He was loved by all of us and will be missed every day. We love you Dad.
