"Sallie" was the daughter of Rev. James Calfee and Elizabeth Virginia Bailey. She married William Alexander "Bud" Thompson.
Article in the "Spokane Daily Chronicle," June 5, 1958, "Glimpses," by Myrtle Gaylord:
Mrs. W.A. Thompson, N5027 Belt, was 96 years old last March 26, but she feels and acts like a woman of 66.
One day this week, she went to the airport to meet her granddaughter, Kathleen Hampton of Palm Springs, Calif., who is visiting her.
"No," she said, "I've never ridden in an airplane and I don't think I'd like to. I'd rather stay on earth. I have ridden in an oxcart and I think I prefer it to a plane."
She said her family and two other families traveled from Bluefield, W.Va., to Sprague, Wash., by train in 1900. They rode in the same car the whole way, she added. The three families cooked their meals on a coal stove in the car. When the train stopped at towns, they would get provisions, she said.
"It took us ten days to get to Sprague from Bluefield," she said.
The other families the the car were the Belchers and Calfees. Mrs. Thompson now makes her home with two of the "Calfee Girls" - Mrs. Nita [Juanita Alice Calfee] Bowen and Mrs. Kate [Lelia Katherine Calfee] Olson [Daughters of James Luther Calfee and Mary Jane Bailey.]
