Herschel J. West
Herschel Joseph West, 81,died on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1991 in Provo, Utah from complications of diabetes.
He was born February 7, 1910 in Byron, a son of William Joseph and Maude Houston West. He married Hazel Lindsay on April 10, 1936 in Byron. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death. He married Marilyn Loose on November 18, 1989 in Provo, Utah.
He was a member of the LDS Church and served in various capacities, including Branch President in Kodiak, Alaska. Herschel enlisted as a seaman in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Arkansas and survived battles in the Pacific during World War II. He gained rank in the Navy and quickly became a commissioned officer during the war; he later was promoted to Lt. Commander.
He is survived by his wife, of Provo, Utah; two sons and one daughter; Herschel J. West, Jr. of Vancouver, Wash., Richard L. West of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Edward (Carol Ann) Edmunds, of Clearwater, Flor.; two stepsons and two step-daughters; Terry Bakken of Provo, Utah, Jesse Loose of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Mrs. Don (Cindy) Mecham of Orem, Utah and Mrs. Tim (Joni) Leonhardi of Palmdale, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; one great-ganddaughter; two sisters: Blanche Dunbar of Pasadena, Calif. and Beth Frye of San Leandro, Calif.; two brothers: Clark West of San Diego, Calif. and Houston West, of Lovell.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 16, 1991 at 1 p.m. at the Edgemont 6th Ward LDS Chapel in Provo. Interment was n the Byron Cemetery, Byron, Wyoming.
