Margaret Hermecz Callaway

Margaret "Midge" Hermecz Callaway, 87, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. She moved to Baldwin County in 1911, having lived in Austria and Hungary before moving to the U.S. in 1906, and was a resident of Gulf Shores.

Callaway managed Callaway's Store on Gulf Highway and Callaway Cottages on the Lagoon. Family members say she was known for her weekly news as Lagoon Correspondent for more than 40 years. She also helped with plans for the Gulf Shores Maritime Museum and contributed gifts to begin it.

Survivors include three daughters, Lillian Bemis and Joy Buskens Robinson, both of Gulf Shores, and Mary Beth Hayes of Bon Secour; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Gulf Shores with the Rev. Chris Coats officiating and burial at Wallace Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are by Cason Funeral Service in Foley.
