John Wood was married at McMinn County, Tennessee on January 30, 1868 to Mary Wattenbarger, daughter of Thomas Wattenbarger and his first wife, Sarah McKeehan. They left Tennessee and settled in Ozark County, Missouri. Following his first wife's death, John Wood was married at Ozark County, Missouri on September 13, 1878 to Nancy J. Hudson.
He was the father of at least two children by his first wife (Jessie Carter and Mary A.) and six by his second wife, four of whom were living at the time of the 1900 census enumeration (Benjamin F., Maud, Guy, and Oliver).
