John was a son of James H. Harlin (Harling) (1810-1891) and Mary Polly Crawford (1813-1894).

In 1869, a three family wagon train consisting of the CONKIN, WALKER, and HARLIN families made a 25-day journey from Monroe County, KY, to Ozark County, MO.

Led by James Patterson CONKIN (b. 10 May 1809; d. 3 Feb 1876), they settled on a farm near the mouth of Lick Creek near Gainesville, MO.

Back in Gamaliel, KY, John William HARLIN (b. 14 Apr 1841; d. 1 Dec 1879) m. Mary Abigail CONKIN (b. 28 Mar 1844; d. 9 Feb 1929), dau of James Patterson CONKIN, on the first day of May 1861. The family grew to eight sons:
1. James Patterson "Jim" (5 Feb 1862 KY-1946)
2. William Tandy "Tan" (26 May 1863 KY-25 Dec 1939)
3. Jarrett Haskell (14 Feb 1866 KY-1 Aug 1950)
4. Joseph Everett "Joe" (1868 KY-25 Dec 1940)
5. Lacy Dewey (1 Mar 1871 MO-1955)
6. Charles Claude "Charlie" (1873 MO-1931)
7. John "Johnny" (29 Jan 1875 MO-18 Dec 1955)
8. Frank Hale (1877 MO-11 Jun 1939)
Their only daughter, Maude Ellen, born in Kentucky, died at birth.

John William HARLIN held several Ozark County offices including county surveyor, sheriff, collector, and the then combined circuit county and probate clerk office.

Suddenly, on 1 Dec 1879, when only 38 years old, John William HARLIN, died of blood poisoning. He is buried in the Gainesville Cemetery. Mary was left with eight sons, ages two to seventeen. Imbued with indomitable faith and courage, Mary not only reared her familly successfully but lived a full life. She was tirelessly active in the Christian Church and the communities of Gainesville and West Plains, even finding time to collect and write poetry. The highlight of her year was the annual homecoming of her "boys", who remained ever devoted to "Mother" HARLIN, as she was widely known. Mary HARLIN is buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery, West Plains, MO.
