"The LaFayette Sun" - August 24, 1898:

Prof. Black Goes to Roanoke.

Prof. Robt. E. Black has decided to move to Roanoke where he has been offered a most desirable position in the college. When the fact became known, surprise and regret
were expressed by the many friends of this gentleman. He has been so long a time connected with the college here, and has been prominent in musical circles, that to think of these things without Prof. Black being a part and parcel of them seems incredible. His record, not only in this place, but in Marion, where he taught successfully for years, and also in Rome, Ga., where he attained a wide reputation, has placed him among the leading musicians and instructors in this county.
In addition to his ability as a performer he is well known as a composer. For years he has labored faithfully in the position of musical director in LaFayette College, holding the position under the management of various teachers. He has also been most faithful as organist at the Baptist church, and it is here that his work doubtless is best known, for he has put forth every effort to give the worshippers at this church a class of sacred music equal to that given in the largest cities. A lady, now deceased, once said, "Prof. Black has that way of serving the Master," referring to his beautiful decorations and sweet music. To say that he will be missed in LaFayette but feebly expresses the feelings of his many friends and admirers. In leaving LaFayette and going to Roanoke he carries with him the best wishes and heartfelt prayers for a successful career in his new field. The Sun, on behalf of its readers, desires to join in the well wishes, and bespeaks for Prof. Black that cordial reception, hearty co-operation and loyal support which he so much merits.
