James arrived in Vietnam 21 March 1961 with India Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. James had gone for R & R in Hong Kong and
was returning to his unit aboard a KC-130F #149802 that took off and crashed into the water, at the end of the Kai Tak Airpor runway. James died of injuries due to the KC-130F crash. His body was recovered. Several other military passengers aboard died.
Survived by his parents; Mr. Massey of Little Rock, Arkansas, and his mother; Caledonia A Bloom, his brother; Sgt Melvin Banks and 2 sisters; Mattie Burks and Mrs. Wynema Lakes.
