Birth: Nov. 5, 1795
Anderson County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Aug. 2, 1871
Lauderdale County
Alabama, USA

The eldest son of Hamilton and Rachel Clements Reynolds, Hughriah or "Hugh", was born the 5th of November 1795 in Pendleton District, SC. A grave marker, bearing that date, still exists in the Reynolds Family Cemetery in Lauderdale County, AL. Hugh Reynolds was no less a patriot than his Revolutionary War veteran father, Hamilton Reynolds. Records are available to substantiate Hugh Reynolds' service in the Alabama Militia during the War of 1812.

Elizabeth Hamm and Hugh Reynolds were the parents of 14 children who were born in either Giles County, TN or Lauderdale County, AL. The majority of the family members lived in the Pruitton, Lauderdale County, AL area until after the Civil War. The fourteen children were: Thomas Hamilton (b. 1817); William Carroll (b. 1819); Nancy Emily (b. 1821); James Marion (b. 1823); John Wiggins (b. 1825); Phoebe Jeanette (b. 1827); Hugh Riah, Jr. (b. 1828); Wesley Blassingame (b. 1830); George Riley (b. 1831); Joseph Pleasant (b. 1834); Anderson Pinkney (b. 1836); Winston Pettus (b. 1838); Elizabeth Dorinda (b. 1840); and Richard Randolph (b. 1842).

In the 1860s, the Civil War reached the Reynolds family and several of Hugh and Elizabeth's sons joined the cause of the Confederacy. It has been reported that General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Colonel Jacob Biffle spent the night at Hugh Reynolds' home in late 1864.

[In remembrance by Hughriah and Elizabeth Hamm Reynolds' great-great-great granddaughters.]
