Dr. Ray Allen Collins, age 82 of Front Royal, died Wednesday evening November 5, 2008 at his home.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Boggs Chapel at Randolph-Macon Academy.
Ray was born March 21, 1926, to the late Raymond and Kathleen Ryan Collins in Seattle, Washington.
Ray was a graduate of Warren County High School. He was a Veteran of the Army Air Corps and held a life-long love of airplanes and flight. He attended the University of Richmond and graduated from the Dental School of the Medical School of Virginia. He was a compassionate and masterful dentist and practiced in Front Royal for forty-five years. He led the fight to fluoride the water in Warren County to protect our children from tooth decay. He was a gifted and skilled candle maker, car mechanic, machinist, welder, gunsmith, blacksmith, woodworker and jeweler. He was a hunter, fisherman and forager. He was a fine cook and enjoyed the local cuisine of Northern Virginia, including fox grapes, morel mushrooms and fine Virginia Hams. He was a man of boundless energy, sparkling wit and abiding interest in the world around him.
Ray was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Jane Dutrow Collins whom preceded him in death in addition to his parents.
Ray is survived by Trudy Carter Collins, his wife for the past eighteen years and the other great love of his life. He is also survived by his son, David Dutrow Collins and his wife Carole Yarbenet Collins. Also surviving Ray are his two daughters Anne Hughes Collins and Nancy Barton Collins, his grandchildren Michael Raymond Collins and Julie Marie Collins, his sister Clara Collins Long and a niece Lisa Long.
