Hattie Meriwether

Hattie Meriwether, 93, a pioneer resident of Long Beach, died Jan 17, 2001, in Ilwaeo.

She was born March 27, 1907, in Castle Rock to William and Anna (Winters) Kroll. The family moved to Long Beach when she was 2 years old. She attended Long Beach schools and as a young girl she helped her family deliver milk by horse and wagon.

She married Eugene Meriwether on June 28, 1928, and the couple helped maintain the Lone Fir Cemetery in Long Beach for many years. Mrs. Meriwether was a homemaker who also worked tending the Washington State University cranberry bogs. She also did domestic work for area families and cleaned summer cottages.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran church. She took great pride in her flower garden and was an excellent cook and baker, often sharing candy and cookies with friends. She enjoyed telling stories, visiting with family and friends and was a morning regular at the Cottage Bakery in Long Beach. She was a loving and caring mother who enjoyed many friendships.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Meriwether of Tigard, Ore., and John Meriwether of Long Beach; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Meriwether was preceded in death by her husband and a son Robert Meriwether. She was the last surviving child of her parents.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Penttila's Chapel by the Sea in Long Beach, followed by a reception at the chapeL Private intennent will take place at Lone Fir Cemetery.
