Alexander Downing was born 29 Nov 1843 in Davis Co., Iowa, the son of Alexander & Elizabeth (Burns) Downing. Service in the Civil War left him in poor health. He was married 25 Oct 1866, also in Davis County, to Minerva Ann Burks and they became the parents of 10 children, six of whom are in this lot. [Civil War pension papers and Downing family records.]

Minerva Ann (Burks) Downing was born 11 Feb 1847 in Danville,Hendricks Co., Indiana, the daughter of John D. & Mary (Hambleton)Burks. She was survived by three children: Millie Kerr, John & Alexander Downing. Her firstborn, Mary Lucretia, died in Iowa at the age of 8 months. [SML 03 Sept 1914 and Downing family records.]

Alexander and his 6 sons all died of consumption. Two of the sons, Thomas Ellsworth and William Harvey, died within 30 minutes of each other. None of these sons married. [SML obits & Downing family records.] The sexton records indicate there were some wooden markers in this lot
as late as the 1950s.
