May have served in the Civil War in a Maryland cavalry unit, as there are some William Gregg's that did. (unable to verify)

Was a clerk by trade.

Enlisted 11 November 1872 in the 7th U.S. Cavalry, as a private. Was assigned to Company F, under George Yates at the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Initially he was back with the pack train and for what reason, is unknown, as Yates was up with the companies with Custer, where he was killed. Gregg saw action on top of what is now known as Reno Hill with Benteen and Reno.
