James Abercrombie, a pioneer resident of this city, and veteran railroad engineer, died at 7 o'clock Wednesday morning after a short illness of k week, at his residence, 605 west Main street. He was apparently in good health up until a few weeks ago, when a gradual decline commenced and the end neared rapidly. In the early 50's when the gold fever was at its highest contagion, Abercrombie joined his forces with the early prospectors in quest of the yellow metal. Early in the year '69 he was employed as an engineer by the Grand Rapids & Indiana railroad, and up until seventeen years ago, followed that occupation, when he retired on account of old age. The deceased is survived by a son, John H. Abercombie with whom he resided during his latter days. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge, and the First Presbyterian church. The funeral will be hold Saturday morning from the late residence. The Rev. H. W. Gelston of the First Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial in the family, lot at Mountain Home cemetery.
