He was "active in NC politics and government from the 1940s through 1960s, and was Commissioner of Agriculture from 1948-1949. He also served as State Budget Director and chairman of the Good Neighbor Council under Gov. Terry Sanford. He left endowments and scholarships at several NC colleges and universities, and buildings were named in his honor at NC A&T State Univ. and Winston-Salem State Univ. He received an honorary doctorate from NC State University in Raleigh in 1968.
