Guitar Maker. He created the Fender Guitar, which became a hugely popular and iconic instrument after the rise of Rock N' Roll music. Born Clarence Leonidas Fender in Fullerton, California, as a boy he became interested in electronics and began dismantling and repairing radios. Opening the Fender Radio Service in Fullerton in 1938, he also dabbled in innovations for musical instrument. In 1946 he started the Fender Electric Instrument Company, and later became the first to design and successfully market a solid body electric guitar with his "Broadcaster" in 1948. Renaming his creation the "Telecaster" in 1950, he would introduced his Precision Bass guitar and bass amplifier the following year. Released in 1954, Fender's iconic "Stratocaster" model has been in continuous production since. Selling his business to CBS Musical Instruments in 1965, in the 1970s, he designed guitars, basses, and amplifiers for Music Man. By 1979 he, George Fullerton, and Dale Hyatt started G&L Musical Products with whom he took out new patents on magnetic pickups, vibrato systems, and neck construction among other innovations. He was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and was a 1992 inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite the enormous impact his musician inventions had on modern day music, he himself never learned to play the guitar. (bio by: Iola)
