Mrs. Melton died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab in Palestine. She was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Pittsburg County, Okla., the only child of Elmer Lee and Maude Roberts Kirby. She became a member of the Methodist Church in her early teens. She completed her last year of high school at Eastern Oklahoma College in Wilburton, where she became an avid reader and was proud of a certificate qualifying her to teach penmanship. She married Thomas Onie Provence in McAlester, Okla., on Aug. 13, 1929. They lived in Hall County before moving to the plains in 1931. They farmed in Lamb County until his death May 4, 1953. She married Raymond K. Thompson in Amarillo in June 1958; he died in February 1966. She married Dois Melton in Shallowater in January 1973; he died in March 1988. She worked at school cafeterias in Springlake-Earth and Amarillo, as a hospital aide in Olton, and as a grocery checker in Earth, Shallowater, and at United Supermarkets in Lubbock. She owned and operated Mae's Coin-op Laundry in Shallowater from 1968 to 1970. She was a longtime resident of Shallowater until moving to Palestine Senior Community in October 1997. Mrs. Melton became a resident at Greenbrier in July 2002.

Survivors include a son, Gary L. Provence of Palestine; two daughters, Beverly McWhorter of Palestine and Retha K. Crowther of Shallowater; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by four grandchildren, two sons-in-law, and one daughter-in-law. Viewing will be at Ellis Funeral Home in Earth, where family will receive friends prior to the services. Memorials are suggested to Shallowater Meals on Wheels or Hospice of East Texas. Family members wish to express their appreciation to the staff of Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab for the care and attention given there.
