Notes for JAMES RICHARD "DICK" HEAD:

The following was copied it as it was written. The article was found at the Ebenezer Baptist Church following a church reunion.

Brother Head was born in Brazos Co., TX. In the year of 1842, his mother died and left him at the age of four. His early training was left in care of a loving sister. In the of 1853, his father moved to Heads Prairie, and settled in the home, now occupied by Sister Fulton. In 1857, his father moved to Erath Co., TX, and in the of 1858, at a protracted meeting, held on Puloxy Creek, by Rev. N. T. Byars, and old Choctaw Billie Holson. He was born of the Spirit. In 1859 or 1860, he again with his father, returned to Limestone Co. and he joined the Army under Capt. A. F. Moss; Col. W. H. Parsons, 12th TX Cal. In 1862
he was honorably discharged and after remaining at home until improved in health. He made application to Eutaw Lodge #283 A. F. & A. M., and was made a Master Mason. He again enlisted in the Army, joining Elmore's Regt., Co. D. at Galveston, TX where he remained until the close of the Civil War. He married October 19, 1865, Fanny A. Burns. Rev. C. W. Kinnard, officiating. There were ten children born to them of this marriage, six of whom survived him and four passed away. He called for a letter of dismissal from the Puloxy Church and joined the Salem Church at Eutaw. There being no church on this prairie. He with several others withdrew from the Salem Church in 1868, and organized Ebenezer. He was made deacon of the Ebenezer Church in 1884, and lived a true and consistent member of the Missionary Baptist Church, a member Ebenezer Church since it was organized 32 years ago. He was near 58 years old at the time of his death. He was a good law abiding citizen, a true Mason, a devoted loving husband and father, uncompromising in his conviction as he thought and taught in God's Word. He died as he lived, a true and noble man, and thus ends the life through the cold chilly waters of death. In this sad farewell, we can only extend to the bereaved ones our heart felt sympathy in this the saddest bereavement of their lives. May the God the Father of all of us Bless this family and when the summons comes, may they all be prepared to meet him in that home where there will be no more partings, no tears, but one continual sunshine of god's love throughout endless eternity.
