John Wesley Merritt, 92, of Mineral Wells, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, at his home.
Service is 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at Southside Church of Christ with interment in the Sturdivant Cemetery. William Eudy and Rev. Bill Harrell will officiate. Pallbearers are Dheryl Sherrell, Moss Dickerson, Noel Thompson, J. R. Patterson, Mark Pittman and Jim Jones. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Saturday.
John was born May 13, 1913, in Delhi, Caldwell County, Texas, the son of Bennett Davis and Mary Belle (Easley) Merritt; paternal grandson of 1stLt James Wesley Merritt (CSA) of Virginia and Susan (Cartwright) Merritt of Tennessee; maternal grandson of William and Ella (Scott) Easley of Bastrop County, Texas (daughter of Walter Patrick and Agnes (Clopton) Scott, also of Bastrop County, Texas).
He was a medic in the 112th Cavalry in the South Pacific during World War II, a cook at Southern Airways and a truck driver. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Southside Church of Christ and Mineral Wells Masonic Lodge. He married Pauline Thurman, May 1985, in Pantego, Texas, and lived in Mineral Wells for many years.
Survivors include his third wife, Pauline Maude Thurman of Mineral Wells; sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Robin Merritt of Crockett, Texas; Lance Merritt of Plano, Texas; Roy and Shanna Merritt of Plano; and Lewis and Tracy Merritt of Mansfield, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Tony Kernagis of Homewood, Ill.; and Mary and Mike Fitz of Arlington, Texas; stepchildren and spouses, Rebecca and Pat Brice of Fort Worth; Dorothy Burns of Arlington, Texas, and Doug and Mary Davis of Pantego, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Nora Turner, Mabel Ford, Emma Warren and Juanita Reedy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
