On Tuesday, February 13, 1866, the Clay County Savings Association in Liberty, MO, was robbed of about $60,000 by the Jesse James gang. Greenup Bird was the cashier on duty that morning along with his son, William, the clerk. The robbers forced the pair into the bank vault, and tried to lock them inside.
