Leon Borden Dies Following an Operation
Leon M Borden, president of the Borden Construction Co. of Johnson City, died at 4 pm Wednesday in the Charles S. Wilson Memorial hospital. Mr. Borden, who was 36 years old, died when complications developed following an operation which was performed Friday. Use of an oxygen tent and blood transfusions Wednesday failed.
Surviving are Mrs Lila P Borden, his widow; Leon Manley Borden, Jr, son; Marcia Ellen Borden, daughter; Thompson Borden of Johnson City and Jay Borden of Unadilla, brothers; Mrs Adjtora Hazen and Mrs. Theodore Chubbuck, of Johnson City, and Mrs Abe Unell and Miss Eva Borden of Binghamton, sisters.
A private prayer service will be held Friday at 3 p. m. In the Ivan A Barber funeral home In Broad street. The funeral will be held in the Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial M. E. church at 2:30 o'clock. Members of the Johnson City Rotary club will attend in a. body. Likewise, the 5O employes of the Borden Construction Co. will attend. Burial will be In the Vestal Hills Memorial Park cemetery. The Rev. Fred E. LotU pastor of the Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial M. E church, will officiate.
A charter membtr of this village's Rotary club, Mr. Borden was serving as its president at the time of his death. He was elected to the office last July. Mr. Borden also was a member of the board of trustees of the Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial M. E. church hero. He was not affiliated with any fraternal organization. Most of his spare time was devoted to Rotary and church work.
One of Johnson City's outstanding business men, Mr. Borden, as head of the construction company bearing his name, constructed many public buildings in this section, including public grade schools at McGraw and Waterville.
The contractor and builder was engaged in construction of a $60,000 office building for the United Shoe Machine Co. at Johnson City at the time of death. He also was responsible for the construction of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Other buildings he constructed included the addition to the Johnson City High school, the Johnson City office of the New York Telephone Co., and many workers' homes for the Endicott Johnson Corporation.
Mr. Borden was educated in the schools of Ararat Pa, where he was born. His father was John Manley Borden and his mother was Mary Lippincott Borden. The builder came to Johnson City about 16 years ago and had been in the contracting business for the past 14 years.
