The 1850 U.S. Census for Ward 1, Cleveland, Ohio (Cuyahoga County) listed Charles as 12 years old, residing in the household of his parents, Thomas and Maria Wall, 43 and 48 years of age respectively, both born in England and two siblings. Charles's father died in 1858 so that the 1860 U.S. Census for East Cleveland, (Cuyahoga County), listed Charles, now 23, his mother, and two siblings in the household.

Charles married Sarah M. Bresie, born in New York State in 1839, on November 17, 1860, in Cuyahoga County. a son, George A. Wall, was born July 7, 1861. Charles enlisted in Company C, 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a 3-year term of service, August 25, 1862. He was killed in the Battle of Ringgold, Georgia, November 27, 1863. Sarah applied for a widow's pension, January 28, 1864, which was approved and issued as Certificate #19362. Charles's name is inscribed on Panel #2 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio, and on the monument of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at Woodland Cemetery, 6901 Woodland Ave., Cleveland.

Sarah married Howell Jacob Betts, September 18, 1872, in Cuyahoga County but the 1880 U.S. Census for Glenville (Cuyahoga County), lists Sarah residing as a married daughter with her parents. Her second marriage negated her pension claim. Neither her husband or son are included in that census. Nothing more is known about them other than Sarah died in 1886.
