Edwin Clark Litchfield's daughter, was a child of the Gilded Age. She lived as a wealthy author and poet. Litchfield was tutored privately at home and abroad. She spent her early life in Europe. Litchfield, a writer, published her first book, 'Only an Incident,' in 1883. She described her experiences in an earthquake while staying on the Riviera in 1877, in her novel 'In the Crucible' (1897). Later she published novels, collections of poems, and contributed verse and stories to magazines. Her works included: 'Criss Cross' (1885); 'The Letter D' (1904); 'Baldur the Beautiful' (1910) and 'Collected Poems' (1922). Grace Litchfield returned to the United States in 1888 and made her home in Washington, D.C., where she remained for 50 years. She maintained a summer home at Lake Minnewaska in central New York.
