LAKELAND, Fla. — Gene Ice, 82, died Sept. 4, 2008, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Fla., following a three-month illness.

He was born July 13, 1926, in Summitville, the son of Arthur and Mamie (Boze) Ice. He resided in Summitville most of his life and moved to Florida 10 years ago.

Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, then was recognized with the Summitville High School Class of 1944 and received his high school diploma. He has always attended the 1944 class reunions.

He was employed as a truck driver and dispatcher for Krevda Brothers Trucking, formerly of Gas City; retiring in 1979. He also worked for Cates Trucking, formerly of Swayzee, for 10 years.

Gene was a former member of the Fairmount American Legion and a current member of the Lakeland, Fla., American Legion. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lakeland. He enjoyed woodworking, baseball and basketball.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Evans) Ice, of Lakeland, Fla., whom he married March 28, 1948; five daughters, Pam Wilson and her fiancé, Ralph Gordon, and Gayle (Jerry) Behm, all of Summitville, Lynda Swantner of Upland, Nancy (Dennis) Hardin of Pine Knot, Ky., and Peggy (Danny) Lesley of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Gaylen (Jackie) Ice of Camden, Mich.; grandchildren, Kimberly (Gary) Brown of Pendleton, Kent (Kathy) Wilson of Swayzee, Kris (Chrissy) Foster of Huron, Ohio, Ryan (Becky) Swantner of Albuquerque, N.M., Angie Thurber (Tim Edwards) of Pine Knot, Ky., Paula (Rob) Myers of Strunk, Ky., Chad Reding of Summitville, Erica (Chad) Hightower of Fishers, Krystle Lesley of Orlando, Fla., Nikki (Adam) Hollingsworth of Chesterfield, Kristen Ice of Gas City, Matt (Lyndsey) Ice of Anderson and Jake Ice of Camden, Mich.; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Agnes Moyer.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 W. Walnut St., Summitville, officiated by the Rev. Gary McCaslin. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Vinson Memorial Cemetery, Summitville.
