Son of Amos Duncan. Three brothers: Joshua, Eli, and John. As a young man, moved from South Carolina through Tennessee to Ohio to Illinois and then to Indiana. He settled in Owen County, Indiana where he owned a large farm around his homestead. He received two Harrison Township, Clay County land patents, first in Section 28 dated October 15, 1835 and a second in Section 21 dated September 1, 1838. He was a farmer and stock raiser. First married Hannah Barrett and then Nancy Murdock (born March 4, 1804). He fathered 16 children.
