Philip Henry Barnhart was the second child born to Nicholas Barnhart & Catherine Frances Keller Barnhart. Both parents immigrated from Germany with their parents around 1843. Nicholas died on August 16, 1918 and is buried in Avalon Cemetery in Avalon, Livingston, Missouri. Catherine died on on October 13, 1909 and is also buried in Avalon Cemetery. Philip Henry Barnhart married Mary Ellen Lawler, born in Iowa, on February 20, 1892 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri.

They had seven children:

Philip Henry Barnhart was a farmer, rural mail carrier, ran a grocery store and Post Office in Cavendish, Missouri, and worked as an engineer for the Kansas City Star for a number of years. Sometime after the 1910 U.S. Census Philip and Mary Ellen moved to Texas where they owned and operated a family restaurant in Harlingen on the 600 Block of West Harrison Street.

Phillip is buried between Mary Ellen and their son, Claude Edward.
