Bernice Florence Slayden was the second child born to Charles Benjamin Slayden and Effie Pearl Selby Slayden.

She married William Bryan Sparks on September 2, 1923 in the First Presbyterian Church of Paris, Texas. The Sparks never had children. Bernice and Bryan Sparks lived all their married life in Cooper, Texas except for a period during World War II when he worked at the shipyards in Houston and she managed a furniture store there. Bernice assisted her father-in-law, Henry Sparks, in the operations of the Sparks Theater. She was bookkeeper for more than 20 years. Bernice was also very active in the First Methodist Church of Cooper.

Bernice was also married to W.J. "Jimmy" Johnson on March 2, 1979 in Delta, County, Texas. He preceded her in death, December 6, 1982.
