Deceased Name: George L. Parkhurst
George L. Parkhurst, 83, a former top executive at Standard Oil of California (SoCal), died Friday at Mills Hospital in San Mateo from complications following a stroke.

A native of Evanston, Ill., Mr. Parkhurst rose through the ranks of several SoCal subsidiaries to become a vice president and director of the San Francisco-based oil conglomerate, now known as Chevron.

Mr. Parkhurst was a member of the Bohemian Club, the Pacific Union Club, the San Francisco Committee on Foreign Relations and was a founding member of the World Trade Club. He also was a member of the American Chemical Society. Fraternal memberships included Alpha Chi Sigma, Tau Beta Pi Phi Lambda Upsilon and Delta Theta Phi.

Mr. Parkhurst started working for Standard Oil of Indiana after graduating from Armour Institute of Technology (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) in 1927 with a degree in chemical engineering. He also earned a law degree from DePaul University in 1934, studied chemistry at the University of Chicago graduate school and served as assistant director of refining in the Petroleum Administration for War in Washington, D.C., during World War II.

After the war, Mr. Parkhurst and his wife, Margaret Sarles, whom he married in 1932, moved to California, where he served as vice president of Oronite Chemical Co., a SoCal subsidiary. In 1949, he was promoted to chairman of the board of Oronite, and remained there until 1955.

Mr. Parkhurst went on to serve as vice president and director of SoCal, vice president and director of California Oil Co., president of Chevron Chemical Co., chairman of Irving Oil Co., director of Arabian-American Oil Co., director of Trans-Arabian Pipeline Co. and director of the Fisher Berkeley Corp., an engineering company.

Mr. Parkhurst is survived by a sister, Lousie Bird of Oakland; three sons, Peter of Los Altos Hills, Perry of San Mateo and Paul of Lafayette; and nine grandchildren. His wife died in 1988.
