Birth: Nov. 27, 1863

Indiana, USA
Death: Mar. 20, 1936
Rolfe
Pocahontas County
Iowa, USA

John S. Roberts, son of William and Henrietta Roberts, was born on Nov. 27, 1863, near Manchester, Ind. In August, 1870, the family moved to Warren county and located on a farm west of Indianola, where he grew to manhood. In March, 1891, he came to Palo Alto county in a covered wagon and located on the land which became his farm and upon which he built his home and made other improvements.
May 20, 1894, he was united in marriage to Adeline M. Nicholas.
To this union five children were born--Vinnie, Mrs. Geo. Fanning, of Humboldt; Gladys, Mrs. Leo Fanning, of Storm Lake; Ralph, near Havelock; and two who passed away in infancy.
When a lad in his teens he gave his heart to the Lord and joined the Methodist church in Spring Hill, Ia. There he found his opportunity for service, for he served the church as Sunday school secretary. After coming to Palo Alto county he became a devout and loyal member of the Riverside Methodist church. Here he found his joy in service as a class leader, and for many years he was Sunday school superintendent. He was a faithful member of the Rolfe Methodist church and a regular attendant at the services and the Sunday school and was up to the time of his death an honorary trustee of the church.
He passed away Friday, Mar. 20, 1936, leaving his wife, three children, eight grandchildren; and three brothers: Chas, W., J. W. and A. L. Roberts.
He was a good neighbor, a true Christian, and a loyal man to his church and his God. He was a man of principals and convictions which were absolutely high.
The funeral was held in the M. E. church at Rolfe with Rev. Clarence L. Tompkins officiating. Music for the service was funished by a mixed quartette--Mrs. Grant Johnson, Mrs. O. U. Cook, Geo. A. Ivey and A. R. Graham, with Miss Arlen Cook at the piano.
The casketbearers were J. A. Johnson, L. D. Smith, R. E. Houck, Wade E. DeMill, Earl Hudson and Bert A. Kerns. Interment was made in the Powhatan Township Cemetery near Plover.
