Obituary: Died on Monday, August 14th, 1893, in the general hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., Aretus Leartus Branning, after a short illness with dysentery.
Mr. Branning was born at Ashland, in Damascus township, Wayne county, Pa., Oct. 20, 1846, and was, therefore, 46 years, 9 months, and 6 days old at his decease. He was the son of Wm. Branning, of Ashland, the son of Jacob Branning, senior. His mother was the daughter of the late Bulkley Beardslee, of Indian Orchard, Wayne county, Pa., and sister of the late Hon. H. B. Beardslee.
He was married March 8th, 1876, to Miss Melissa Beardslee, of Gilbertsville, N.Y.. Three children were born unto them, two of whom died in early years. Mrs. Branning died last winter, and the only child, Bessie, found a home with her grandparents in Ashland, Pa., and Mr. Branning went to Buffalo, NY to work at his trade of carpentering, ( engaged as foreman for a company of builders and contractors) where he continued until his death. He was a kind husband, a loving father, and a good friend and neighbor. He had a kind word for all; a cheerful smile for those he met, and an open hand and heart for those in want. The distress of others pained him more than his own; to relieve them he would go to all lengths. In character he was stubborn for the right, inflexible for the good, unbending for the truth. He believed in God; he believed in man. He was generous to a foe, unswerving to a friend. As a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, he strove both to be and to live a Christian life. Slowly and sadly were his last rites performed by his brother Masons, as they lowered his remains to sleep beside those of his wife and children, August 18th, in the Beardslee Cemetery near Gilbertsville, N.Y., to await their resurrection.
