He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1862, and went into the 64th Reg. of Illinois Volunteers for the War, along with his brother, Newell Ransom. They served in Mississippi, going thru several battles, and when his brother died of typhoid fever, he was with him and took responsibility to ship the body back to Hillsdale.
After the war he became editor of The Christian Freeman, a western denominatonal publication. His health continued to decline from the exposures of war. 'He accepted the chair of belles lettres at Hillsdale, but it was only a matter of months until his brief professorship would end.' He suffered from tuberculosis and died in 1874, an outstanding young man, loved by his family and college friends.
