U.S. Congressman. He attended Jefferson College, learned the printer’s trade and also taught school. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and rose to the rank of Captain in command of Company B, 150th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he remained in the Veteran Reserve Corps, United States Army, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced to practice law in Brookville, Pennsylvania. He was District Attorney of Jefferson County Pennsylvania (1878-89) and elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving (1889-91). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 80.
