While her name is listed in her father's family Bible as Lenorah Colon, I think she went by Colin or Colen. In the Bible, her birth date is given as 2 Dec. 1875, but on her death certificate it says 29 Dec. 1876. She was the 12th of 14 children born to Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and his wife Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882). She grew up on her father's farm, where he also had a store and a cotton gin, and later the first telephone exchange in that part of the country. The Beachums and Taylors were both old Virginia families that had come to North Carolina in the 1700s. See Colen's parents' entries on Find A Grave for more information on the family history.

Colen married Charles Franklin "Charlie" Ballard (1878-1955) on December 28, 1899, and they lived at Peachland, NC for many years, though they spent brief periods living in Charlotte, NC and Hamlet, NC. They had no children, but adopted two. One was Ophelia Jane Stearns (1909-1910), daughter of Colen's sister Mary Jane Beachum Stearns (1867-1910) after Mary Jane's death. (Both Mary Jane and Ophelia Jane are buried in Charlotte.) Little Ophelia Jane didn't live long. They later adopted a girl named Ollie Deanne (1812-2003).

Charlie Ballard died in a Monroe hospital on 13 Sept. 1955, and his wife Colen died two days later in a Charlotte nursing facility. Both are buried at the Peachland cemetery. The house where they lived for many years in Peachland has been restored.
