KIA: KOREA: US ARMY, PFC James Clayton Young, Born: 3 Jan 1928, BHS 1947, Died: 1 Sep 1950, Buried: Bays Cemetery, Eggleton, Putnam County, West Virginia.

United States Army Private First Class served with the Ninth Infantry Regiment, Second Infantry Division. He was killed in action while in combat in South Korea.

Two Beaverton young men were among the 600 of the 9th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, who recently completed their basic training. The eight-week basic cycle included courses in first aid, camouflage, care and maintenance of equipment, rifle instruction and the fundamentals of the infantry soldier. Recruit James Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melf Young, of Route 2, Beaverton, shot "sharpshooter" on the rifle range with the M-l rifle. Recruit Olan L. Whitmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Young, of Beaverton, has been in San Diego, California, preparing to embark for Hawaii to participate in the joint Army, Navy and Marine maneuver, "Exercise Miki'', which will involve some 16,000 Fort Lewis soldiers who will land on the island of Oahu late in October. CPL JAMES C. YOUNG Mr. and Mrs. John W. Young, of Beaverton, route one, have received word that their son, Cpl. James C. Young, has been missing in action in Korea since Sept. 1. The information was received in October but a later communication informed them that the case was not closed. Cpl Young left for Korea in August from Fort Lewis, Washington. He graduated from the Beaverton school in 1947. The Youngs have two other sons in service. Howard is with the air force in Germany and Luther is in the Navy, stationed on the USS Albany. Cpl James C. Young, 23, of Beaverton, has been reported as Killed in Korea on Sept. 1. He had previously listed as missing in action. His parents, Mr and Mrs John W. Young, of Beaverton, received the following telegram on Feb. 8: "The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deep regret that your son, Cpl James C. Young, was killed in Korea. First September 1950. He was previously reported missing in action on that date. Confirming letter follows,---Edward F. Witsell, Major General USA, the Adjutant General of the Army." Cpl James Clayton Young was born Jan. 3, 1928 at Byrnside, West Virginia and came to Michigan in 1942. Entering the Beaverton School, he graduated with the 1947 class. Clayton enlisted in the armed services Jan. 12, 1949 and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Lewis, Washington before completing his training in Hawaii. From there he was sent to Korea, arriving Aug. 31 of last year. In his last letter home he said, "I'm fighting hard but don't worry about me." Cpl Young is survived by his parents, four brothers and five sisters. He was the eldest child of the family. Two brothers are in the service, too. Howard is a sergeant in the air force in Germany and Luther is in the navy. Lucille, Arthur, Loretta, Richard, JoLane, Dorothy and Rebecca are all at home. Gladwin County Record 2/21/1951

The body of Pfc James C. Young, of Beaverton, has been returned to the United States and burial will be made in Big Creek, West Virginia, where he was born. Pfc Young is the son of Mr and Mrs John W. Young, of Beaverton. He was killed in action Sept. 1, 1950, the day following his arrival in Korea. The funeral services will take place in Big Creek within two weeks, according to members of the family. Young was born Jan. 3, 1928 and is survived by his parents; four brothers, Howard, Luther, Arthur and Richard; and five sisters, Lucille, Loretta, Jolane, Dorothy Jane and Rebecca. Three of the brothers are in military service. Howard is with the air force in Germany, Luther in the Navy, and Arthur with the army on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Gladwin County Record 7/25/1951

SEPTEMBER 1, 1950 - North Korean troops crossed the Naktong River at numerous points at the bulge and north and south of it and struck the 2nd Division, which recently had gone into the line. At the western edge of the bulge the 9th North Korean troops drove away Company B of the 9th Regiment with heavy causalities and with the shattering of Company B left a wide hole through which thousands of North Koreans surged towards Yongsan. By the morning of September 1st North Koreans had penetrated all the way through to the North-South Changnyong road and had cut the 2nd Division in two. The enemy had punched a hole six miles wide and eight miles deep in the middle of the 2nd Division line and the frontline battalions of the 9th and 23rd Regiments were reeling from the blows.
