She was taken during the Indian troubles as a child, along with another girl from her neighborhood. She lived amongst the natives for nearly nine years until arrangements were made by Colonel Bouquet to return all captives to their original families. Many came from all over the state. Her mother searched and searched but was unable to find her daughter, who by now, was much older and no longer spoke any German. It was suggested to her mother to sing a German hymn which the child might remember. The song alone yet not alone am I is a very solemn, unique song with an unusual tone.
