C. H. HERBOLD PIONEER FARMER DIED TUESDAY
FUNERAL SERVICES TO BE HELD THIS (THURSDAY) MORNING

C. H. (Chris) Herbold, 87, prominent and successful farmer and stockman passed away at his home in this city at 12:05 Tuesday morning, March 4th, 1941, following an illness of about a week.

About two years ago, Mr. Herbold had a slight stroke and since that time has not been as active as before, but was able to be about daily. He contracted a cold about a week ago, but seemed to be recovering until Saturday when he took a turn for the worse. He was placed in an oxygen tent and every effort possible made, but to no avail and he passed away early Tuesday morning.

Mr. Herbold was a large land owner and successful stockman and considered one of the substantial men of the community for many years.

Returning from the farm in 1929, and moving to Colfax, he still maintained a keen interest in farm problems and even up to the last sickness his interest in the community and nation remained active.

C. H. Herbold was born Dec. 21, 1853 in Germany and came to America with his parents when a small boy. The family first settled in Scott county, later moving to Jasper county, where the Herbold homestead was established northeast of Colfax, and where Mr. Herbold lived on the same farm for 42 years, moving to Colfax 12 years ago.

Fifty-six years ago he was united in marriage to Lydia Hickey at Newton. To this union four children were born, one daughter, Minnie (Sister M. Blanda) preceeding him in death twelve years ago.

Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. John F. Hynes, Des Moines, two sons, W. J. Herbold and Chas. F. Herbold of Colfax; six grandchildren and one great grand child; two half brothers, Lewis [sic. Louis] and Amos Herbold of Newton, and two half sisters, Mrs. Sophia Carrier of Newton and Mrs. Minnie Armstrong of San Gabriel, Calif., besides numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted this (Thursday) morning from the Immaculate Conception church with the Rev. D. F. Cahalan officiating.

Pall bearers were Will Kelly, John Doyle, John Cairns, Arthur Watt, Frank Baker and Frank Tramel.

Interment was in the Newton cemetery.
