Sarah Short was the daughter of Hannah Carr (1781-1816) and Jacob Short (1775-1825).

Sarah moved from Fountain Township, St. Clair County, Illinois to Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois with her father in 1822 and then to Sandridge near Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois in 1824.

She married David Rice Short (1805-1846) on October 29, 1829 in Morgan County, Illinois.
